    I think you need more. Like rate of decent, how to know when you are 10 ft above the runway, and exactly what the pitch is at any time during the landing. I saw some videos with Synthetic vision which gives you exactly what you need to land a plane. How do you do this with out this aid?

( by the way, the more I learn about flying, the more respect I have for commercial pilots and pilots of all kinds and how much they have to be on top of and on the ball. especially airline pilots who have sometimes 150 + lives in their hands. great respect!

    First solo 500 foot ceiling foggy with good visibility below the fog. Turned finals pulled out full flap dropped power & the altimeter hardly moved . I had to go around & slip it in, fortunately I knew how to do it. My instructor was delighted, I just did what I had been told what to do. I was flying an old Auster, I loved that thing, hardly responsive but heaps of fun to fly & learn how to land. Landed on dirt very few paved runways around where I live.

    You say a pitch change requires a power change, but you don't specify the change. If you pitch down do you reduce power?

    • @ftb8218
      @ftb8218 5 лет назад

      Yes you'll reduce power otherwise you'll speed up and descend too quickly

  • @vedymin1
    @vedymin1 5 лет назад

    People fly these too much like airliners, this is a piston engine not a turbofan, it has an almost instant reaction to throttle and a much lower dependability. Also the plane you are flying has a much lower speed range than an airliner. It is much safer to fly a higher approach most of the time, look at ww ll landing techniques, they almost guarantee that in case of an engine failure you will have the runway made every time. Dragging yourself close to the ground with a much more failure prone engine just so that you can do that 3 degree glideslope like big iron does is like dropping all your life insurance out the window. Liners need to fly like that thanks to how their engines respond, their range of useful thrust, the range of speeds for landing, etc etc. Ga's don't. And if you need to drop that altitude, just do a slip.

      Some do use a dry erase marker to help train. But you just need to realize what you're looking at and why... the marking just shows this vividly for the slow among us. Just know that your aiming point should drift down or up on a stable approach to land, but just stay at the same place on the window. If aiming point drifts up, you're too low and need to decrease your rate of descent to get back on a better glide path. Add power. Keep pitch for speed as needed. If aiming point drifts down, you're too high and need to increase your rate of descent to get back on a better glide path. Reduce power. Keep pitch for speed as needed. Power for altitude, pitch for speed for landings. And really, this same concept is essentially for keeping altitude and speed controls for any part of the flying. Just some other stuff to consider.

    EXCELLENT produced Vid...! I use to explain to my students (back in the mid '70's at KFAY) the reason we practiced "turns around a point" is to take each quarter of the turn and super-impose THAT quarter to the traffic pattern - upwind to crosswind, crosswind to downwind, downwind to base, and base-to-final approach and we teach and incorporate climbing and descending turns for the same reason... It all goes back to "traffic pattern work".... I would also teach, from downing to touchdown, a power-reduction concept - you can decrease power but can NEVER add power unless there is a requirement for a "go around" or in gusty wind conditions.... I really admire your teaching of the nose wheel HAS to settle down on the CENTERLINE of the runway...! Again, GREAT Vid...! Thanks for posting this...! Gordon in Maryland

    Sporty's, like many others, are "Screwing the pooch" so to speak. I've bought 2 complete PPL and IFR DVD sets from Sporty's over the years for no small fee and last year I looked into buying my 3rd. Sadly they now do the cloud BS and you no longer own something you can watch at your leisure. If you buy it today, get busy (like most people) and your year ends, then you must pay for it again, and again, and again. It's now a never ending rental agreement and I WISH I could post an image here to show the response I was given last year when I politely inquired about it. I was once a major Sporty's contributor and now I hope they crash and burn for not just their selfish and greedy practices, but how I was talked to by their supposed MOD (manger on duty). Mind you, I talked to the MOD AFTER the initial insult. Greed is the new, them. I still use their site. Though very slow these days, I still have my reasons. The last 4 (maybe 5) thousand dollars I spent was after reading about it on their site and then simply Googling it and buying it elsewhere. I can only imaging that the great man, Richard L. Collins kept these selfish bastards at bay while he was alive and now that he's dead they stomp on his grave. Burn in hell you selfish has-beens.

    Try looking for the Young Eagles program which allows 8yo.to I believe 18yo. to fly with a pilot at normally no cost like an introduction flight. If lucky enough you may find one who is a CFI (instructor) that can sign off on the time as well. It's a great program for kids. They will accept donations but it's not required. There a great group of people. Good luck.

    Smoking, and very hot Battery Pack which could have easily caught fire in my plane. Want to warn fellow aviators about this radio. My SP-400 was purchased in 2015, used a few times mainly for ATIS and as a backup. the other day the battery's were dead, so I changed them turned it on ran for a short period of time and it was dead again, I changed the batteries installed the battery pack turned the SP-400 on and it was dead, figured I must have installed a battery reversed removed the battery pack and the pack was very hot and smoking, (batteries were installed correctly) I immediately removed the batteries and installed fresh new batteries as soon as I installed the last battery the pack started smoking, again immediately removed the batteries. I have always used top of the line Alkaline batteries. Purchased 2 years ago. Called customer service at Sporty's and was told I would need to purchase a new battery pack as the battery packs are under warranty for only a year. Nowhere does it mention the packs are only covered for a year. It only states 5-year warranty in large letters. This battery pack came with the radio when it was purchased. I am very concerned and would never purchase another SP-400 as this could easily have caught fire while I was up in the air flying if I had not checked it first. I am also very disappointed with Sporty's customer service in the way I was treated as they didn't seem to care about my safety and only wanted me to purchase a new battery pack. Even after speaking to a supervisor. After my experience with Sporty's customer service, I will not purchase any more products from Sporty's. I recently had an issue with a push to talk I purchased from Aircraft Spruce they immediately took care of me, And I had a new push to talk within a few days. Now I know who will be getting my business. Customer service is number 1 for me in who I deal with. I did a review on Sporty's site, same as above with a picture of it smoking and they removed my review goes to wonder how they can keep the reviews they want. And remove the ones they do not want. Poor Business Sporty's See my RUclips Video of it smoking here ruclips.net/video/5RT7zzcynEs/видео.html

      If a battery pack smokes with alkalines in it, there can be a cell-to-cell short, due to assembly error of the metal contacts in the pack. It's fixable. I'd rather use a Sporty's radio then a Icom or Yeasu with a slew of menus to go thru before you can use it.

    One of the better 'how-to-land' videos I've seen [former instructor, 5,500 Hrs]. It didn't labor 'fly-by-numbers' but did give sensible advice on accurate nose attitudes and interpreting the runway aspect. I did however cringe at the adverse aileron yaw, which really should have been nailed on the 'primary and secondary effects of controls' lesson.

    I know AGL means "Above Ground Level", but what's the height valve? Like if I'm 500 feel below clouds but really I'm 700 feet AGL. Does that mean at ground level we are 200 feet higher than see level and I'm suppose to add that to those figures? Surly, y'all can see I'm a rookie. Thanks for your help in advance.( Please no wise cracks okay? Thanks)

    • @brandon5058
      @brandon5058 6 лет назад

      rdlez It depends on the elevation. AGL means how high you really are above the ground. So if you are flying at 850ft and there is a mountain thats 850 ft your AGL is 0 ft. When runway elevation is 200ft you would indeed need to calculate 200ft + your original height.
